Get to Know Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

  • Excellent Water Dogs: Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were bred for retrieving waterfowl in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, making them strong swimmers with a dense, waterproof coat.
  • Highly Intelligent but Stubborn: They are very smart and trainable but can be strong-willed, requiring consistent training and socialization from an early age.
  • Unique Coat: Their double-layered coat is slightly oily and wavy, which helps repel water and protect them from harsh weather conditions.
  • Loyal and Protective: Unlike some retriever breeds, Chessies are known for being more protective and independent, making them excellent watchdogs as well as hunting companions
  • Strong Work Ethic: Chessies are hardworking dogs that thrive when given a job, excelling in activities like hunting, search and rescue, and competitive dog sports.

Breed History

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated in the early 19th century along the Chesapeake Bay, where it was bred to retrieve waterfowl in harsh, icy waters. The breed's ancestors include Newfoundlands and various retrievers, resulting in a strong, resilient dog with a thick, water-resistant coat. Chessies were highly valued by market hunters for their endurance, intelligence, and exceptional retrieving abilities. Over time, they became known not only as skilled working dogs but also as loyal companions, and in 1918, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Loyal and Protective Nature: Unlike some retriever breeds that are overly friendly with strangers, Chessies tend to be more reserved and watchful, making them excellent guard dogs. They form strong bonds with their families and are particularly affectionate with their owners, often showing deep devotion and a desire to be near them at all times.
  • Intelligent and Independent Thinkers: This can make training both rewarding and challenging. They learn quickly but have a stubborn streak, so they require consistent, positive reinforcement. Their strong work ethic means they thrive in activities like hunting, obedience training, and even dog sports, but they can become bored or destructive if not given enough mental and physical stimulation.
  • High Energy & Playful: They love water and are natural swimmers, often enjoying activities like retrieving in lakes or rivers. While they can be affectionate with their families, they are not overly needy and prefer having a job to do. With proper training, socialization, and regular exercise, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers make loyal, hardworking, and loving companions.

What to ask your breeder?

It's important to ensure your breeder conducts thorough health screenings on the two dogs that were bred for the litter. Reputable breeders should perform genetic laboratory testing and also orthopedic evaluations. There's no way to guarantee every puppy in every litter is 100% free from health problems, but responsible breeding practices greatly reduce the risk.
