Get to Know Coonhounds

  • Bred to Hunt by Sound, Not Sight: Coonhounds rely heavily on their extraordinary sense of smell and their distinctive baying voice. Hunters could locate their dogs in dense forests simply by listening to their calls echo through the night.
  • One of the Best Noses in the Dog World: Their scent-tracking ability rivals that of Bloodhounds. Once a Coonhound locks onto a trail, it can follow it for miles without losing focus.
  • America’s Original Night Hunters: Coonhounds were specifically developed to hunt raccoons after dark. Their stamina, courage, and ability to “tree” prey made them invaluable to early American settlers.
  • Calm at Home, Intense Outdoors: Indoors, most Coonhounds are surprisingly relaxed and easygoing. Outside, they transform into high-drive working dogs with relentless energy.
  • Distinctive Voices Are a Breed Signature: Each Coonhound has a unique bay, howl, or chop bark. While beloved by hunters, this vocal nature requires understanding and training in suburban environments.

Breed History

Coonhounds originated in the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries, bred by early settlers who needed a dog capable of hunting raccoons and other game across rugged terrain. They descended from European scent hounds, including English Foxhounds and Bloodhounds, selectively bred for stamina, cold noses, and treeing ability. Over time, regional preferences led to the development of distinct Coonhound types. Though still prized hunting dogs, many Coonhounds today thrive as loyal family companions in active homes.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Independent Thinkers: Coonhounds were bred to work far from their handlers, making them confident decision-makers. This independence can appear as stubbornness without consistent training.
  • Affectionate & People-Friendly: Despite their working background, most Coonhounds are gentle and loving with their families. They often enjoy lounging with their people after a long day of activity.
  • Driven by Scent: Their noses rule their world. Without secure fencing or leash control, they may wander off following an interesting trail.

Care

  • Exercise: Long daily walks, hikes, or scent-based activities are essential to satisfy their high energy and mental drive.
  • Grooming: A weekly brushing is usually sufficient to keep their short coat healthy and clean.
  • Training: Patience and positive reinforcement are key, especially when teaching recall around distractions.
