Get to Know Keeshonds

• Symbol of a Revolution: The Keeshond is one of the few breeds tied directly to a political movement. During the Dutch Patriot uprising in the 1700s, the dog became a living emblem of democracy and resistance against the ruling House of Orange.
• Built for Barges: Historically called the “Dutch Barge Dog,” Keeshonden lived and worked on canal boats, serving as alert yet friendly watchdogs. Their thick coats protected them from the damp chill of life on the water.
• Smiling Expression: The Keeshond’s distinctive “spectacles”, dark markings and shading around the eyes, create an expressive, smiling face that seems to radiate friendliness. This trait, along with their fox-like features, makes them instantly recognizable.
• Masters of Emotion: Keeshonden are extremely intuitive and sensitive to human moods. They’re known for offering comfort to their owners, earning them a reputation as natural therapy dogs.
• Award-Winning Coat: The Keeshond’s double coat, plush undercoat and long, straight outer coat, is not only beautiful but also practical, offering insulation and weather resistance. Despite its fluffiness, it naturally repels dirt and doesn’t develop a strong odor.

Breed History

The Keeshond (pronounced KAYZ-hond) has deep roots in 18th-century Holland, where it served as a watchdog and companion aboard canal barges and along the Dutch waterways. It became a national symbol of the Dutch Patriots Party during a time of political unrest, named after their leader Cornelis “Kees” de Gyselaer and his loyal dog. Though the breed’s popularity waned after the political movement’s decline, it was later revived in the early 20th century and is now loved worldwide for its intelligence, loyalty, and cheerful personality.

Personality and Behaviour

• Friendly& Outgoing: Keeshonden are naturally social dogs who thrive on human companionship and greet everyone as a friend.
• Highly Intelligent: They pick up commands quickly and enjoy mental challenges, making them excellent at obedience and trick training.
• Loyal & Watchful: Their alertness makes them great watchdogs, but they rarely act aggressively—preferring to announce visitors with an enthusiastic bark.

Care

• Exercise: Daily walks, active play, and mental enrichment keep them content. They’re agile and playful but not hyperactive.
• Training: Early, positive training and socialization are key. They respond best to reward-based methods and are happiest when included in family activities.
• Grooming: Their double coat requires regular brushing and occasional trimming around the feet and hocks. They shed heavily twice a year and need extra care during those times.
