Having a Papillon is a joy and challenge—they’re smart and need mental stimulation to stay happy. They’re social and affectionate, wanting to be involved and my boy doesn't like being left alone. Papillons can be reactive or barky, especially if overwhelmed, but with the right enrichment, structure, and love, they make loyal, fun companions.

Get to Know Papillons

  • Distinctive Ears: The Papillon is named after the French word for 'butterfly' due to its butterfly-like ears.
  • Highly Intelligent: They are quick learners and excel in obedience and agility competitions.
  • Lively and Playful: Despite their small size, Papillons are energetic and love to play.
  • Affectionate Companions: They form strong bonds with their families and are great lap dogs.
  • Adaptable: Papillons do well in both small apartments and larger homes as long as they get exercise.

Breed History

The Papillon, whose name means “butterfly” in French, is a small toy breed that dates back to Renaissance Europe. Originally called the Continental Toy Spaniel, its hallmark butterfly-like ears became popular in the 17th century. Papillons were favored by royalty and nobility, often appearing in portraits of European aristocracy. Despite their small size, they are known for their athleticism, intelligence, and lively demeanor.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Energetic and Playful: Papillons are lively little dogs with boundless energy. They enjoy games, interactive play, and exploring their environment, making them great companions for active families.
  • Intelligent and Trainable: This breed is highly intelligent and excels in obedience training and canine sports like agility. They thrive when given mental challenges and love to learn new tricks.
  • Friendly and Affectionate: Papillons form strong bonds with their families and are affectionate companions. They are generally friendly with strangers and get along well with children and other pets when properly socialized.

Care

  • Exercise: Despite their small size, Papillons are active dogs that need daily exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Short walks, play sessions, and mental enrichment activities like puzzle toys are ideal for meeting their needs.
  • Grooming: Papillons have a long, silky, single-layer coat that requires regular maintenance. Weekly brushing prevents tangles and mats while keeping their coat looking its best. They are relatively low-shedding. Routine ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are essential for maintaining their overall health and hygiene.
  • Training and Socialization: Papillons are eager to please and respond well to positive reinforcement training. Early socialization helps them grow into confident adults comfortable in various environments. Their intelligence makes training enjoyable, and they often excel in obedience and agility sports.
