Breed History

The Tibetan Spaniel is an ancient breed that originated over 2,000 years ago in the monasteries and palaces of Tibet. Unlike typical spaniels, this small dog was bred not as a hunting companion but as a sentinel and companion to Buddhist monks. Known for their keen alertness and watchdog instincts, Tibetan Spaniels were prized for their ability to guard temple grounds by barking to alert residents of any intruders. The breed’s elegant, lion-like mane and expressive face made them cherished companions and symbols of good luck. Over centuries, they remained relatively isolated in the Himalayan region until Western explorers introduced them to Europe in the early 20th century, where their charming personality quickly won hearts worldwide.

Personality and Behaviour

• Alert but Not Yappy: True to their roots as monastery watchdogs, Tibetan Spaniels are naturally alert and observant. They will sound the alarm when something unusual catches their attention but are not excessive barkers. Their balanced temperament makes them great watchdogs who won’t overwhelm you with noise.
• Loyal & Affectionate: These dogs form strong bonds with their family and thrive on human companionship. They tend to be affectionate without being clingy, often choosing to sit beside you rather than on your lap. With their calm, loving nature, they make excellent emotional companions and are known to be especially attuned to their owners’ moods
• Intelligent & Independent: Tibetan Spaniels are bright, observant, and often act with a sense of self-assured independence. While they enjoy learning and can be trained effectively, they’re not always eager to follow commands blindly. They like to think for themselves, which can sometimes come across as stubbornness—but it’s really a sign of their sharp, discerning minds.

Care

• Exercise: Tibetan Spaniels have moderate exercise requirements. A couple of daily walks and some indoor or backyard playtime are usually enough to keep them healthy and happy. They’re agile and curious, so they enjoy exploring, but they’re also quite content to relax and nap once their energy is burned off.
• Training: These dogs are intelligent but independent, so training should be approached with patience and positive reinforcement. They respond best to gentle, consistent guidance rather than harsh corrections. Starting early with socialization and basic obedience helps shape them into well-mannered companions.
• Grooming Needs: Tibetan Spaniels have a silky, medium-length double coat that requires brushing several times a week to prevent tangles and reduce shedding.
